Art pieces come about through inspiration from the works of others. Many a times new pieces are influenced by and based on the works of other artists. Many art movements have emerged throughout the ages. A particular style that Rachel gravitates towards seems to be a mixture of a particular type of Cubism and tribal tattoo designs.
In Cubism, subjects whether people or landscapes, were made out of a combination of basic geometric shapes.
A more accurate style of cubism to describe Rachel's work would be 'Universal Flowering' which was developed by Pavel Filonov. This involved very dense and detailed work, going from vastly detailed to more general designs. It also involved multiple vantage points and figure representation over time.
Shostakovich's First Symphony.
Composition. Ships.
Horsemen. As you can see from all the above, all these artworks have a mixture of vertical, horizontal, curved and S-shaped lines that in the end create different geometric as well as organic shapes of all sizes. They represent tranquility, power, strength, change and action respectively, giving the artworks direction. However, what differs in each painting is the implied textures. From ascending order, the paintings move from a soft nob-like feeling to a harder uneven surface. The hues of the paintings differ from one another. The '
Shostakovich's First Symphony' has a softer more pastel feel to it while the '
Composition. Ships.' has a more complimentary color feel. Lastly, the
Horsemen. painting tends to use more warm colors. All colors coincide with the value of the paintings in terms of it's tone.
When studying the balance of most of Filonov's works, one may find him or herself at a lost because there is too much to focus on. With that said, the paintings have a sort of balance with more/big light pieces balanced out by fewer/smaller darker pieces. His use of gradation of colors helps the eye look along the shape and provides some sort of direction. In all three pieces, much repetition occurs but so does the diversity which makes it a very 'full' and interesting to look at. Lastly, the unity in the pictures seems to be 'too much' and causes the painting to look perhaps a little cluttered, chaotic and messy at first glance.
Apart from that, great fascination comes from looking at tribal designs. Though not exactly an art movement by itself, she finds that it is something worth mentioning.
Ex Illegale.
Tattoo by Kaco. What these works of art have in common is the ability to use lines very simplistically to create mostly organic type shapes of varying sizes. However, in this style the use of colors is kept to a minimum, mostly involving only black though highlights may be included. the texture of these tattoos, because done on skin will have a more implied texture when first done as the skin is raw and causes swelling.
Tribal ink designs tend to have very good balance as can be observed from the following two designs. Both have almost equal corresponding parts which help to hold the weight on both sides. The gradation used in the second ink design is better as it not only aids the eye to flow along the shape but to also give it direction and movement as compared to the first. In the first design, repetition occurs more frequently with minimal variation causing it to be less exciting as compared to the second. Unity in both pictures seem to be good, not making the eye 'jump' from one section of the design to the second. Instead, a nice smooth flow exists.
In the upcoming projects, Rachel plans to combine both the chaotic feel of the pictures with the more structured and clean design of the inks in hopes that it will result in a well-balanced picture.
