][ Anger's Final Product.. ][

Title : Anger : Wrath.
Tagline : Anger.

I wanted to convey moods and settled for portraying the mood of ‘Anger’ which is why the series itself is named so. Anger is a very strong emotion and it is related to an individual’s interpretation when being offended, wronged or denied which most often than not, results in retaliation. I wanted the person looking at the picture to be able to feel the sort of mood in each art piece; for the person on the other side to be able to sense the anger, hatred and frustration of the series.

Wrath represents when we have reached the end of our proverbial rope and we can simple take no more. We've gone beyond our limitations and the hounds of hell are now unleashed. We are no longer trying to control anything. The interpretation here is i fact, when all hope has been abandoned and all control has been lost, pain will be caused. Revenge will be had. It's payback time. We curse the heat, we curse the air, emotions have become not unlike a volcano and without a second thought, we burn everything in our path.

Anger : Wrath.

Anger Series.
Artwork 3 - Anger : Wrath.

The final piece to the puzzle to complete the anger series is 'Anger : Wrath'. This speaks about uncontrolled rage. It is like a pressure cooker and only time will tell when the explosion will occur. Anger expresses itself in many ways that the eye can see, be in in facial expressions, body language or psychological responses. Living creatures tend to make loud sounds or attempt to make themselves look larger and exhibiting aggressive features which are designed to warn the other party to bring the threatening behavior to a stop.

This also happens to be the piece that I have chosen to be printed for this module.

Artwork was executed in only illustrator as I find I am more familiar with the program. Illustrator also allows for more fine and exact lines which is dire for my work.
This is my 'draft', the last sketch that I picked scanned into the computer.
I then uploaded my final sketch into illustrator. I gave it it's own layer and entitled it 'original doodle'.
I then used the pen tool on a new layer to painstakingly trace each line. As with the other two, I started off first by tracing the tagline 'anger'. It is present in all three works. Again this was accomplished by zooming into the original sketch. I also used the shapes tool to aid me in obtaining elliptical or square shapes but the majority of it was organic shapes. When working on the artpiece I did not fill in the tracings but worked with it empty to ensure I did not miss out on any pieces that needed to be traced for I feared overlapping may happen. For this final piece, I added more layers as there were more distinguishing features on it and for me myself to not get confused, I find it easier to placed them individual layers.
This view is after I had finished tracing the entire design and inking it in with black.
This is how it looks when I was working on it, not filled. As you can see, there are many layers depicted by the different colors of the pen tool.
This is how it looks without the 'original sketch'.
This is the completed version without the 'original sketch'.
Afterwards I drew a rectangle fitting the canvas size using the shapes tool. I then fiddled around with colors as well as the gradient tool. I used a large streak of yellowish-orange down the center diagonally to highlight the tagline in the picture. The rest of the colors are a variation of deep to bright reds, most highlighting the different elements in the art piece.

Punishment : The Day After.

Anger Series.
Artwork 2 - Punishment : The Day After.

When anger is ignited in a person it is often very difficult to control and may result in irreparable damage. There are times when people get hurt from the outburst of another person's anger, and it results in the victim being punished for whatever he or she did to upset the other person. Scars and wounds is not something that goes away overnight. Rather after the body is hurt, the next day always seems to be the worst as skin and flesh is still tender and bruised from the traumatic damage that it received. Artwork has many 'stitches' in the design to depict lines from the result of whipping or scrapes.

Fever : Ubiquitous Celefaction.

Anger Series.
Artwork 1 - Fever : Ubiquitous Celefaction.

Anger is a very strong emotion and it is related to an individual’s interpretation when being offended, wronged or denied which most often than not, results in retaliation. The first piece is entitled 'Fever : Ubiquitous Calefaction’ which basically means inescapable inflammation. This was to represent the times when anger is just inescapable. It engulfs you entirely and you succumb to the emotion which is why the picture itself has many fiery elements. The flames are made to look as though they are licking picture where the heat is everywhere.

I used very bright reds for this one to depict fire and being fierce. Although it looks as though there is just one color, the gradient was very subtle with tones varying very little from one another.

][ Unicorns Will Rule the World.. ][

Communication Series : 'Anger'. Title : Fever
Tagline : Ubiquitous Cele-faction.
Title : Punishment.
Tagline : The Day After.
Title : Anger.
Tagline : Wrath.

Visual concept Description.

When I picked the communication series, I wanted to convey moods and settled for portraying the mood of ‘Anger’ which is why the series itself is named so. Each picture concentrates on a different aspect. The first picture called ‘Fever’ with the tagline ‘Ubiquitous Calefaction’ which basically means inescapable inflammation. It has many fiery elements as though the flames are licking the picture where the heat is everywhere.

The second piece is called ‘Punishment’ and the tagline is ‘The day after’. This is because the painting has many long criss-cross like lines which gives off the impression of ‘stitches’. When anger occurs, many a times a physical outlet is needed which is also how abuse happens. The angered person punishes the other, not being able to control nor are they aware of the extent of the strength used.

Lastly, the third is called ‘Anger’ and it speaks about uncontrolled rage.

Color Theory Analysis.

The major defining color present in all three art pieces will be reds, varying from bright to dark reds. Red is the most emotionally intense color which stumulates an increase in heart rate as well as breathing. It is the color of blood an fire, associated with energy, power and passion. To put it simply, it commands and attracts attention.

Typography Theory Analysis.

For all three designs, there will be no typography. However, hideen within all three pieces are the words 'anger' etched in which the use of different shapes. A lack of typography would give more focus to the painting as words would only serve to distract the observer.

Elements of Design.

Staying true to the style of Pavel Filonov, all three art pieces have a mixture of horizontal, curved as well as s-shaped lines. Though there is the presence of geometric shapes, the use of organic shapes occupies most of the space. The tone or value of the works would be high in constact as there would only be the use of reds and white. However, because of the amount of detail in the picture, it may not be very apparent and may look as though each piece of detail is 'merging' into another. The texture of the pictures moves in gradation from smooth in 'Fever' to almost glass-like and bumpy in in 'Anger'. 'Punishment' has a feel of tension and being stretched. The movement in all pictures are rather messy and chaotic, mostly focusing firstly in the middle then moving outwards as the eye beings to search the artwork.

Principles of Design Analysis.

The balance of the pictures are not exceptionally equal with certain sides being heavier than the other. With that said, the pictures are neither lopsided. As for the gradation, darker reds would give off the impression of depth and movement, adding interest to the pictures. Apart from that, between all the chaos there is actually much repetition whereby similar shapes are reused. Furthermore, much variation is used as some identical shapes are filled, some left empty while others have interesting new additions to it. In all designs, because of the lack of white space, the eye does not need to make uncomfortable jumps around the picture as mentioned above; the designs seem to merge into one another. This forms and unending 'maze' that the eyes follow.

][ Pink Fluffy Unicorns.. ][

Art pieces come about through inspiration from the works of others. Many a times new pieces are influenced by and based on the works of other artists. Many art movements have emerged throughout the ages. A particular style that Rachel gravitates towards seems to be a mixture of a particular type of Cubism and tribal tattoo designs.

In Cubism, subjects whether people or landscapes, were made out of a combination of basic geometric shapes.

A more accurate style of cubism to describe Rachel's work would be 'Universal Flowering' which was developed by Pavel Filonov. This involved very dense and detailed work, going from vastly detailed to more general designs. It also involved multiple vantage points and figure representation over time.
Shostakovich's First Symphony.
Composition. Ships.Horsemen.

As you can see from all the above, all these artworks have a mixture of vertical, horizontal, curved and S-shaped lines that in the end create different geometric as well as organic shapes of all sizes. They represent tranquility, power, strength, change and action respectively, giving the artworks direction. However, what differs in each painting is the implied textures. From ascending order, the paintings move from a soft nob-like feeling to a harder uneven surface. The hues of the paintings differ from one another. The 'Shostakovich's First Symphony' has a softer more pastel feel to it while the 'Composition. Ships.' has a more complimentary color feel. Lastly, the Horsemen. painting tends to use more warm colors. All colors coincide with the value of the paintings in terms of it's tone.

When studying the balance of most of Filonov's works, one may find him or herself at a lost because there is too much to focus on. With that said, the paintings have a sort of balance with more/big light pieces balanced out by fewer/smaller darker pieces. His use of gradation of colors helps the eye look along the shape and provides some sort of direction. In all three pieces, much repetition occurs but so does the diversity which makes it a very 'full' and interesting to look at. Lastly, the unity in the pictures seems to be 'too much' and causes the painting to look perhaps a little cluttered, chaotic and messy at first glance.

Apart from that, great fascination comes from looking at tribal designs. Though not exactly an art movement by itself, she finds that it is something worth mentioning.
Ex Illegale.
Tattoo by Kaco.

What these works of art have in common is the ability to use lines very simplistically to create mostly organic type shapes of varying sizes. However, in this style the use of colors is kept to a minimum, mostly involving only black though highlights may be included. the texture of these tattoos, because done on skin will have a more implied texture when first done as the skin is raw and causes swelling.

Tribal ink designs tend to have very good balance as can be observed from the following two designs. Both have almost equal corresponding parts which help to hold the weight on both sides. The gradation used in the second ink design is better as it not only aids the eye to flow along the shape but to also give it direction and movement as compared to the first. In the first design, repetition occurs more frequently with minimal variation causing it to be less exciting as compared to the second. Unity in both pictures seem to be good, not making the eye 'jump' from one section of the design to the second. Instead, a nice smooth flow exists.

In the upcoming projects, Rachel plans to combine both the chaotic feel of the pictures with the more structured and clean design of the inks in hopes that it will result in a well-balanced picture.

][ Unicorns Exist.. ][

Hello.

Rachel Soon thanks you for stopping by.

There's not much to say, really. Rachel is a student in HELP University, majoring in Psychology with a goal of finishing by the end of 2012. The subject matter captured her interest from the start and she hasn't looked back since. Psychology has provided an outlet for intellectual stimulation; To be able to test, understand and systematically study a certain subject in hopes of helping others in future.

With that said, another part of her does yearn to be able to pursue art. Yes, the ever evolving human skill that involves passion, a vivid imaginationand a mix of emotions. Rachel hopes one day to be able to become one of those artists that people get inspired by and aspire to be. To be able to produce works that will be appreciated not only for it's beauty but also the ability to evoke powerful emotions.

Ms. Soon has found that she blooms in the area of 'doodle' art. Several examples are available in the side bar. Of course much find tuning is still needed and she is working on that.

Maybe one day you'll be getting an invitation to one of her shows in an art gallery.
