Tagline : Wrath.
Visual concept Description.
When I picked the communication series, I wanted to convey moods and settled for portraying the mood of ‘Anger’ which is why the series itself is named so. Anger is a very strong emotion and it is related to an individual’s interpretation when being offended, wronged or denied which most often than not, results in retaliation. I wanted the person looking at the picture to be able to feel the sort of mood in each art piece; for the person on the other side to be able to sense the anger, hatred and frustration of the series. Each picture concentrates on a different aspect. The first picture called ‘Fever’ with the tagline ‘Ubiquitous Calefaction’ which basically means inescapable inflammation. It has many fiery elements as though the flames are licking the picture where the heat is everywhere.
The second piece is called ‘Punishment’ and the tagline is ‘The day after’. This is because the painting has many long criss-cross like lines which gives off the impression of ‘stitches’. When anger occurs, many a times a physical outlet is needed which is also how abuse happens. The angered person punishes the other, not being able to control nor are they aware of the extent of the strength used.
Lastly, the third is called ‘Anger’ and it speaks about uncontrolled rage. It is like a pressure cooker and only time will tell when the explosion will occur. Anger expresses itself in many ways that the eye can see, be in in facial expressions, body language or psychological responses. Living creatures tend to make loud sounds or attempt to make themselves look larger and exhibiting aggressive features which are designed to warn the other party to bring the threatening behavior to a stop.
Color Theory Analysis.
The major defining color present in all three art pieces will be reds, varying from bright to dark reds. Red is the most emotionally intense color which stumulates an increase in heart rate as well as breathing. It is the color of blood an fire, associated with energy, power and passion. To put it simply, it commands and attracts attention.
Typography Theory Analysis.
For all three designs, there will be no typography. However, hideen within all three pieces are the words 'anger' etched in which the use of different shapes. A lack of typography would give more focus to the painting as words would only serve to distract the observer.
Elements of Design.
Staying true to the style of Pavel Filonov, all three art pieces have a mixture of horizontal, curved as well as s-shaped lines. Though there is the presence of geometric shapes, the use of organic shapes occupies most of the space. The tone or value of the works would be high in constact as there would only be the use of reds and white. However, because of the amount of detail in the picture, it may not be very apparent and may look as though each piece of detail is 'merging' into another. The texture of the pictures moves in gradation from smooth in 'Fever' to almost glass-like and bumpy in in 'Anger'. 'Punishment' has a feel of tension and being stretched. The movement in all pictures are rather messy and chaotic, mostly focusing firstly in the middle then moving outwards as the eye beings to search the artwork.
Principles of Design Analysis.
The balance of the pictures are not exceptionally equal with certain sides being heavier than the other. With that said, the pictures are neither lopsided. As for the gradation, darker reds would give off the impression of depth and movement, adding interest to the pictures. Apart from that, between all the chaos there is actually much repetition whereby similar shapes are reused. Furthermore, much variation is used as some identical shapes are filled, some left empty while others have interesting new additions to it. In all designs, because of the lack of white space, the eye does not need to make uncomfortable jumps around the picture as mentioned above; the designs seem to merge into one another. This forms and unending 'maze' that the eyes follow.
